Phase I Off Camera
I was in my locker room on my laptop watching some footage of Floyd McCarver’s past wrestling matches. I had to get myself in the proper mind frame to wrestle this guy. The trouble that was going on between me and Alexis Makarios was really starting to get on my nerves. She was becoming one of the biggest aggravations I had encountered in a long time. She was going to pay for all this hassle she was causing me. That much I was sure of. I heard someone walking into the room and I turned my head and it was Dean. One of my best pals, along with Romeo. Those guys always had my back. He came walking over to me and lazily fell down into the chair beside me with a smirk on his face.
Dean Andry: What are ya watchin’?
Darren Maddox: Some of McCarver’s matches. I need to be ready for this guy.
Dean Andry: The guy may be physically big, but I don’t think ya have anything to worry about.
Darren Maddox: What’s my rule Dean? I never underestimate my opponents.
Dean Andry: That ain’t what I’m tellin’ ya to do man. Back in the independent feds, you took down some of the biggest guys. This McCarver guy ain’t no different from them. Ya just gotta get into this match and show ‘em how much better you are than he is.
Darren Maddox: That’s the plan. He’s reached main event status in our playground. It’s up to me to show him that he doesn’t deserve main event status in our playground.
I was learning a lot about McCarver’s wrestling style the more I watched his matches. The guy had many weaknesses.
Darren Maddox: See, look at this.
I backtracked in the video by about six seconds and pointed to the screen at the part playing in the match where McCarver should have gone for a pin.
Darren Maddox: He should have gone for the win right there. He doesn’t capitalize on his chances. He doesn’t take initiative.
Dean started to smirk more as he looked at me.
Dean Andry: In other words, he needs to go back to playin’ football?
Darren Maddox: I don’t give a fuck what sport he’s in. I just don’t want him in our playground. He doesn’t belong here. He needs to give up.
I slammed my laptop closed, stood up, cracked my neck, and went over to the little fridge I had in my locker room and got out two cold beers. I held one out for Dean and he came right over and took it. He never refused alcohol.
Dean Andry: Ya know, McCarver needs to give up on wrestlin’, but, ya know, you need to give up on somethin’ too.
I stood there not sure what he meant.
Darren Maddox: What the fuck are you talking about?
Dean Andry: Ya need to give up on this idea of tryin’ to win Lycra over. She’s outta your league man. Ya don’t stand a chance with her. A woman who’s known as some legend in wrestlin’ doesn’t go out with younger guys like you. I ain’t sayin’ this to rain on your plans or anything man. I just don’t want ya havin’ any false hopes, know what I’m sayin’? The sooner ya see that, the better it’ll be for ya. There’s lots of other chicks out there.
I knew Dean was being sincere, but this wasn’t about what he wanted. It was about what I was feeling right now.
Darren Maddox: Might be lots of other women out there Dean, but they’re not her. I’m trying to be her friend, to reach out to her, to get close to her, and then there’s interference from the red headed bitch. She’s a speed bump in the road and I need to do something about her.
Dean Andry: You’re not gonna listen to me then? Is that it? You’re still gonna try to get Lycra? If ya honestly care about her, then that’s one thing, but, if ya want her just to spite Alexis, then that’s the wrong reason man.
Darren Maddox: I’m not doing this to spite the bitch. I really do care about Lycra. If I go after her and she doesn’t feel the same, then, that’s what I have to live with, and I will. I’m not out to pressure the woman to do anything. But, she has a right to know how I feel.
Dean Andry: Ya, she does have a right to know, but, I think ya need to be careful is all, considering she has history with DeMarco. I don’t know what that history is in detail, but, I think that’s somethin’ ya need to find out.
Darren Maddox: I plan on finding out everything about what happened between her and DeMarco. She’ll tell me. I’ve learned how to get Lycra to talk and open up.
I took a few swallows from my beer. Dean did the same.
Dean Andry: I’m with ya in whatever ya do man, but, ya know, ya just gotta keep your ass outta jail. Every day I think to myself, how long is it gonna be before Darren lands his ass back in jail again.
Darren Maddox: I’m not going back to jail. I’ve got Extreme Justice to think about now. Where would you and Romeo be without me? How many times have I kept your ass from getting caught over the shit that you’ve done over the years Dean? Romeo, not so much. He’s more laid back than you. But you get way out of control when you want to be, and that’s when Maddox has to step in and knock you down a few pegs. Like in that match we just had. You were about to use those brass knuckles of yours on the bitch.
Dean Andry: Ya, and remind me again, why exactly did you stop me?
I had to wait before answering that one. I took another drink from my beer.
Darren Maddox: Because I have to keep in mind that as much as I can’t stand Alexis Makarios, she’s Lycra’s best friend, and that’s the only thing that that red headed bitch has to hang over my head. If I hurt the bitch too badly, Lycra won’t talk to me anymore.
Dean Andry: Tough break man. Tough break. You could have ended Alexis a long time ago and been done with all this.
Darren Maddox: Yeah, well, not that easy. But, I’ll deal with it, on my own. This week, I deal with Floyd McCarver. Once I score the winning “touchdown” in this match, he’ll regret ever thinking he can handle the pressure of being a main eventer, and he’ll regret ever thinking he could beat Darren Maddox.
Dean got that sinister grin on his face.
Darren Maddox: Then, after I finish McCarver…
I took another swallow from my beer.
Darren Maddox: I find a way to get rid of Alexis Makarios for good, without hurting Lycra in the process. I have to be careful. Damn careful.
Dean remained standing right next to me grinning even more at thought of doing even more damage than what we had already done. For me, this wasn’t very enjoyable because I had to play out every move I made so carefully. I had everything to gain or everything to lose.
Phase II On Camera
After Dean left about an hour later, I headed out of my locker room and proceeded down the hall, only to hear someone trying hard to catch up to me.
Maria Stone: Darren! Wait up!
I kept walking to ignore her.
Darren Maddox: Not now Stone.
She eventually caught up to me and got in front of me with her microphone in her hand. I had no choice but to stop.
Maria Stone: Just a few questions about your match with Floyd McCarver coming up this Monday!
Darren Maddox: Why are you women so persistent?
Maria Stone: I’m an interviewer. It’s my job to be that way!
I was already annoyed with her.
Darren Maddox: Make this fast. I’ve got things to do.
She had a big smile on her face, way too energetic of a woman for someone like me to be around.
Maria Stone: As everyone knows, there is a big size difference between you and Floyd McCarver. How do you plan to overcome a 280 lb mountain of muscle? There’s a big weight advantage in his favor going into this match. What’s your strategy?
Darren Maddox: Maria, if I told you my strategy on camera, then that would be telling McCarver my strategy, and that would be giving him even more of an advantage now wouldn’t it. I’m not as big as he is, you’re right, but I’m a hell of a lot smarter that what he is. I’m smart enough to not give my game plan away to you, him, or anyone else.
Maria Stone: Do you think this is some kind of punishment on you by management to be thrown into a match with such a powerhouse like McCarver?
Darren Maddox: Whether that’s what this is or not, it doesn’t matter. McCarver needs to get himself psyched up to lose, and since he’s such a big, powerful guy, that means he’s only gonna fall that much harder.
Maria Stone: He has a history in playing football, so he’s well accustomed to playing things fast paced. Are you worried at all that, well, maybe you might not be able to keep up with him in the ring?
I chuckled at that question.
Darren Maddox: Maria, you’re talking about him like he’s some kind of superfast human being. Floyd McCarver has a lot, and I mean a LOT, yet to prove in that ring. I’ve seen him wrestle and he’s nothing to talk about. The only thing people need to start talking about around here is Darren Maddox and Extreme Justice, because we’re the ones who have a lot planned for this company. Some people will love what we’re gonna do. Some people will hate us for what we’re gonna do. Some people already hate us, isn’t that right, Alexis?
I winked at the camera because I knew the red headed bitch was watching every move I made, and I knew she would be sure to see this interview.
Darren Maddox: Time’s up Maria. This thing’s done.
I walked away from Maria and she tried to get in another question but I kept walking. I wasn’t one to do interviews. I hated them. If I had something to say to someone, I did it through my actions, not through my words. My extreme actions always got my point across so much better and I wanted it that way. The camera faded out on Maria standing there holding her microphone in disappointment as she watched me leave.

*Floyd McCarver is shown walking down the halls in a suit and tie, looking down and despondent. He knocks on the office of WXW Co-Owner Cassandra Caldwell, when she asks him to come in, Floyd comes in the room, his eyes low.*
Cassandra: Oh, hello Floyd, how can I help you?
Floyd: Miss Caldwell, first of all, let me thank you for the opportunity that you gave me, I wanted to see if I could make it outside the NFL, in another sport, but so far it hasn't been as successful as I was hoping for. I haven't won a match yet. And while I admit, most of those matches were against veterans who have accomplished a lot in the WXW so far, this last loss, to Marcus Cage, it has eaten me in my gut for the last week, I'm tired of losing.
Cassandra: Floyd, what are you saying?
Floyd: I'm think I'm saying that I want to quit, I haven't been successful at all since coming here, no matter who I went against, I wound up losing, and it looks like I won't be any more successful this week against Darren Maddox, not when he's got his buddies Andry and Youngblood backing him up. I just don't think I have been given a fair opportunity to really spread my wings here. So far I have been thrown in amongst the sharkss and I've really just never learned to swim, I'm sorry. I just don't know if I can keep it up at this rate.
Cassandra: Well, what if Andry and Youngblood were banned from ringside? Do you think you could go through with the match then?
*Floyd takes a deep breath.*
Floyd: I'll give it a shot. I'm sorry to seem so down, but I've never really lost at this level before, all through my college career, the teams I were on rarely lost two games in a row, and almost never lost 3 games in a row. Same thing with my short stint in the NFL, it's just not something that I see myself getting used to. No matter what happens later tonight, I think I'm just going to retire from the WXW. Win or lose, I think I lost my passion for this business. I've had it beaten out of me.
*Cassandra hisses and bursts out with anger.*
Cassandra: You know how pathetic you sound right now?! Look at yourself, you're a big, big man, you're 6'3 and 275 pounds of muscle, you look like you could take the head off of half this federation's roster! But you come to me whining like a little bitch because of how you haven't been able to win a match? Guess what?! It takes hard work, it takes intensity, it takes determination, and it takes dedication to become a success in the WXW. I thought that you were a guy that had all of those attributes, if I didn't think you did, I wouldn't have signed you 3 months ago, but now look at you, a couple losses and you're ready to go home with your tail in between your legs! What else, are you gonna cry like a little baby before me? Floyd, you could be an excellent competitor, you could be a champion, but you have to pull everything together and you have to make the commitment to make yourself better! Now can you do that, or should I sign your last paycheck and send you off?
*All through this tirade, Floyd looked to be getting madder and madder until finally he could take it no more.*
Floyd: You know what?! You're damn right, Cassie, I will tell you this, I am going to go down to that ring tonight, and I am going to call Darren Maddox out, if I win or if I lose, it doesn't matter to me now, all that matters is the amount of pain I'm going to give that punk. He's going to see what it's like for a 275 former linebacker who has put guys out of the sport of football to be barreling down on you full force.
*Floyd leaves the office and leaves a smiling Cassandra behind, shaking her head.*
Cassandra: Boy, I love being the WXW Co-Owner!
----------------------
*Floyd's music starts playing and he heads out to the ring in full wrestling gear. He hops up and down and then rushes down to the ring, slides under the bottom rope. He picks up the house mic and tries to quiet the booing fans down.*
Floyd: Hey shut up you redneck mothas!
*The crowd explores in even more boos.*
Floyd: Whatever, I don't give a damn what each and every one of you thinks of me, I only care about one thing, and that's beating the hell out of any damn person that dares to cross my path, and tonight, I only got one thing to say to that fool Darren Maddox. Tonight, I'm going to show you and the rest of these inbred jackasses, and all the people in the back that Floyd McCarver ain't a man you want to mess with. The ledger that has wins and losses on it may read 0-4, but tonight, I'm going to put that 1 check in the Win column, and I'm going to do any damn thing I can to do just that. Bring your friends, bring anyone you want, nothing, and I mean NOTHING is going to stop me from running over you like a semi-truck over a bunch of egg shells! Prepare to be destroyed by the most dangerous man to step foot in a WXW ring!
*Floyd throws the microphone to the ring announcer and gets ready in the corner, waiting for his opponent to come down with a fierce looking smile on his face.*
